Desiccant packs for shipping containers are moisture-absorbing products designed to protect cargo from humidity and condensation during long-distance transportation.
These desiccant packs or strips typically contain a blend of calcium chloride and adsorbent polymer. They are distributed around the shipping container – generally hanging by hooks along the internal walls. They can also be laid on top of pallets, and secured by an adhesive pad.
6 hanging strips would be normal for a 20ft container and 12 for a 40ft. They are extremely effective in reducing relative humidity, thereby preventing condensation, i.e. “container rain”.
Where appropriate smaller bags of desiccant, silica gel or modified desiccant clays, can also be used within the export packing cases themselves, inside sealed foil bags sealed poly bags e.t.c or in sealed electronic cabinets to give localised protection to any areas susceptible to damage from humidity.
Agricultural products, merchandise goods, industrial products, hanging clothes, or containerised bulk loads can all be shipped together. For any purpose, Desiccants caters for all.
For Shipping Container Desiccants, very large quantities of silica gel (and even more activated clay desiccant) would be needed to protect a shipping container and its contents from high humidity (container rain).
Calcium Chloride adsorbs 10 times more than silica gel and has been used as a desiccant in shipping containers for many years – BUT it has one big disadvantage:
Calcium chloride converts to liquid brine when it adsorbs moisture. If a pack is damaged and then leaks, it can cause serious damage to the goods it is supposed to protect.
Dry Dragon uses NEW technology. There can be NO leakage because it BECOMES SOLID AS IT ADSORBS MOISTURE. (This is a feature of the special polymer used in its compilation).
6 Strips (1 carton) will protect a 20ft container for 6 weeks
